We are proud of our history
On June 13th, 1912 at the age of 19, Americo Joseph Semento left his home town of Provincia di Avellino in the Campania region of Italy to make his way to America. He settled in Chicago with other family members who had arrived before him. As a skilled tailor he took a job with a men’s clothier. After eight years he set up his own shop in Valparaiso’s downtown district. The tailor shop was the Semento families’ first business venture, but not the last. Americo and his wife Theresa bought a piece of property along a main dirt road in South Valparaiso. By 1926 the Lincoln Highway, now known as Highway 30, had been completed and was a premier cross country thoroughfare. It seemed like a good place to build a restaurant, so in 1939 Semento’s Napoli Café was started. Americo, known to many as Mike, ran the business for many years with the help of his wife and family. Mike lived in an apartment in the back of the tavern and opened every day after tending his garden out back. Many people came in and bought fresh garden vegetables that he displayed behind the bar. Even into his nineties, he opened daily until he passed away in 1987 at the age of 93. His son Americo Joseph Semento Jr., known as “Papa Joe” took control of the business and ran it with his son Americo Joseph Semento III, better known as Joey. Many customers young and old came in to visit with Papa Joe regularly. He genuinely loved turning customers into friends. Joey had started catering thru the business and it came quite successful serving everything from weddings to birthday parties to company parties. In December of 1999 Papa Joe passed away. Continuing the tradition, Anthony (Tony) Semento stepped in to work with his father. Joey took care of daily business while his wife Robin helped with the catering, and Tony tended to the nights. Joey was responsible for updating the bar continually, to make it what it is today. Following his father’s lead, he turned many customers into friends with his wit and compassion. Sadly, Joey passed away in June of 2012. Semento’s has been run by four generations of family and is one of the oldest family owned businesses in Valparaiso. We consider it an honor to have served this wonderful town for such a long time. We believe the key is being flexible, and extending exceptional service of quality products to great customers. If you have time, ask to speak with Tony or Robin, we always love to make new friends.
